MOT
The 5 most common MOT failures (and how to avoid them)
By Gary Whitworth · 30 Sep 2026 · 5 min read
Almost half of MOT failures are things you could spot yourself in five minutes.
Many MOT failures come down to simple things you can check at home.
1. Lights and signals
Walk round the car with someone pressing the pedals and switches.
2. Tyres
Check tread depth and look for cuts or bulges.
3. Brakes
Pulling to one side, grinding or a soft pedal all need looking at.
4. Visibility
Chips in the driver's view, worn wipers and an empty washer bottle can all cause a fail.
5. Suspension
Knocking over bumps can mean worn parts.
