7 checks to do before winter

Five minutes on your driveway now could save you a breakdown on a freezing morning.

Breakdowns spike in the first cold snap of the year — usually from problems that were easy to spot.

Your checklist

Battery: if the engine's slow to turn over, get it tested (we do it free)

Tyres: at least 3mm of tread for winter grip

Coolant: check the level and that it's the right strength

Wipers: replace them if they smear

Screenwash: top up with a proper winter mix

Lights: check every bulb, including fog lights

Emergency kit: blanket, torch, de-icer and a phone charger
